Be fascinated by the half millennium long story of Idrija Mercury!
Ever since a scraper found drops of an unusually heavy and unknown glittering substance in a well in 1490 while soaking a barrel, life in Idrija has revolved around one thing and one thing only - mercury.
Slovenia's oldest mining town, which for centuries supplied the whole world with the precious liquid metal, is steeped in a rich heritage of mercury at every turn, and a whole new world opens up when you enter the depths of Idrija's mysterious underground.
Together with Almadén in Spain, Idrija's mercury heritage is recognised at global level, being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the heritage of all mankind.
